Vol 4 : What's Trending

Perfect timing is a real thing. In 2017, DC Comics released their film Wonder Woman. This film was the first female solo superhero film in their universe and the first to have a female hero lead a film in 15 years. After the success of the film in 2017, others began to follow and start focusing on their female characters. Marvel has since released Captain Marvel, their first female lead film in 2019, and is releasing their second female led movie with Black Widow, which is set to come out next year. DC Comics have already followed up with announcing a releasing the movie Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey, the female group of heroes/anti-heroes, and the soon to be release Wonder Woman 1982. The point is, since 2017, companies have been paying attention to the impact these films are having and have jumped on to the trend of making the female superhero presence known.

As I mentioned previously, I began my journey into the comic book world, with the intention of focusing on the female characters, around the same time this trend began, like I said, perfect timing. Seeing all these characters get the shine and spotlight they deserved made me smile and there is no sign of this trend slowing down. Wonder Woman received a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $412.6 Million in the box office. Captain Marvel went on to make $1.128 Billion in the box office. Seeing the results of these movies, in regards to the numbers and other analytics, shows that it is a great move and decision to make for movie makers to decide to focus more on their women superheros and villains. Then putting aside those numbers, the impact these movies had on the audience members and comic books fanatics was also massive. Looking on Facebook, Instagram, and so on, little kids, young adults, and others were dressed as these characters for Halloween and throughout the year to show their love and appreciation of these characters.

Now of course, women have been in superhero movies, so its not completely a new thing, but what is new is having them being the main character, the one whose backstory is shown, and following their journey to build a love for them is new. It has been the common thing to have the female characters be a love interest, side character to the hero or villain, or just another person on the team. Taking this new turn in having them being the star, the main characters was a big game changer, that has been long overdue, that is exciting to see and has many anticipating for more.
